Anytime somebody asked our founders how we were growing so quickly, theyd say, Talk to Max. So I ended up meeting a lot of people who were doing some really unique things in their sales processes, and we started a Sales Hacker Meet Up.Then, later, I was leaving one job and thought itd be fun to do something on my own, and have a conference. When I asked my Meet Up who would attend, lots of people raised their hands, two p eople offered to sponsor it, and others wanted to be speakers.That level of interest showed me that even people I considered to be on the cutting edge of sales tech and sales process felt they needed more help. Now, we deliver our training content as free webinars twice a week and have grown our blog to 125k subscribers. Going digital has helped us reach more people who need advice or tips.What technology/innov ation/platform has had the most profound effect on the field of sales in the past few years, and why?Well, Im biased but I believe it has to be Outreach. The big change facing all sellers right now is that buyers have more power and knowledge than ever. We used to talk about personalizing outreach as a way to stand out, and thats not enough anymore. We used to talk about social selling, but now the way to think about it is called omni-channel selling and we see tools for salespeople that help them be where their buyer is, at scale. Make all of your reps do the actions that your best reps do, automatically, giving you efficient and predictable revenue.What are the biggest challenges, from a technical and/or business standpoint, that those in sales face nowadays (can tie into the previous question)?I think a lot of people still struggle with finding the right balance between effectiveness and efficiency, personation or relevance and scale. Weve got a lot of new tools on the market tha t do both, and finding ways to help those tools work together can be complicated.Big picture, do you feel the worlds of sales and marketing are converging, and if so, is this a good thing? Or should they remain their own distinct fields? Please explain.Theyre converging, but I think well always have distinctions. It shouldnt just feel aligned. It should feel integrated.What are the key steps that salespeople should take when it comes to cold calling/emailing?Especially for those who are just starting with a new product, or new audience persona, stick to the script. Cold outreach success in the long-term depends on your ability to make smart decisions based on data. If you dont keep some things consistent, you wont have good data with which to make those decisions.Learn the most common objections your colleagues get and shadow their calls to hear how they handle them. Take notes and prepare your best responses for when you get the same objections.Prepare good, open-ended questions, a nd practice your whole script, with questions. Practice with anybody you can, so by the time you get a prospect on the phone, youre not practicing, youre a pro.What should they avoid?Dont waste your or a prospects time if you dont think you can actually help them solve a problem. Focus on reaching out only to those prospects for whom your solution could make a big impact.What advice do you have for Millennials looking to make a career move into sales?First, sales is a great careerIf you want to start a career in sales, be prepared for lots of rejection. Whether you begin as a Sales Development Representative or dive right in as an Account Executive, youll face a lot of nos. And that starts during the job-search, so design a plan for follow-up and treat your future employer like an account youd like to sell. Reach out to multiple contacts, and research the company as well.Youve built a career on finding efficiencies in everything from startups to large organizations. Do you take a di fferent approach to each or is there a similar strategy you employ? Please explain.Im a big fan of automation. I think people should spend their time doing things only people can do. That means, creative thinking, analysis, complex problem solving, communication, etc.I try to look at organizations as if theyre systems and think, Are there other systems (or people) out there that can do parts of this for us? The goal isnt to reduce headcount, but to help people focus on the things theyre really good at, that add the most value.Asking that question is one thing, though. One new option is EdXs MicroMastersprogram, a series of graduate-level courses from a variety of top universities. (EdX, it should be noted, was founded in a collaborative effort by MIT and Harvard.)What separates MicroMasters courses from other programs is that successful students can apply to the university that offers the course. If accepted, they can pursue an accelerated masters degree program on campus with the university. The Skills Gap ProblemAs the business world changes, so do best practices and skills requirements for top jobs. These changing requirements have left many organizations without access to the talent they need, in part because todays job seekers dont get the education necessary to succeed in tomorrows job market. Fifty-three percent of respondents to the EdX survey say they use less than half of their education in their current job, while 15 percent say they use none at all.To address this problem, its up to educational institut ions to provide to students across all majors relevant skills training they can use in the workplace. In addition, the rapid evolution of the business world means employees must be willing to pursue additional skills training throughout their careers especially if they expect to make a career change at any point.Todays global-level skills shortage illustrates the enormity of the gap that many employees face between their college educations and what employers are looking for, Agarwal says. Individuals and their employers need to recognize that they will likely need to upskill and reskill in order to keep up. Embracing a mindset of lifelong learning is beneficial, and colleges and businesses can help workers recognize this.A major career shift can be difficult, but it isnt impossible. Through innovative education options, job seekers can get the skills they need to stay competitive, whether in their current professions or on completely new career paths. Whether one decides to change careers or develop within their current role, dedicating oneself to continuous improvement is a sure way to stay relevant in any field.

6 Tips for Talking With Executives - The Muse6 Tips for Talking With ExecutivesThe first time I made a presentation to an executive team, I quickly realized it welchesnt business as usual. There was a different energy in the room. It was intense, efficient, and expectant. No one had to tell me there was no time to waste it was obvious. I knew it was an important opportunity, but at the time, I didnt realize how unprepared I was for it. Thankfully, it went well- but I realized that working with executives isnt exactly your typical meeting. As you grow in your career and are offered mora opportunities, youll likely have the chance to interact with those higher-ups, too. When you do, youll notlageice that they operate a bit differently. They read situations more quickly, get to the meanings behind the message, and have an uncanny ability to decipher numbers and recall information in a remarkable way. So if you want to be upwardly mobile (read get promoted), youll need to understand how to be seen and heard by those senior-level managers most effectively. Start with these six tips for communicating with executives so you can departure preparing for that higher-level interaction. 1. They Fly at a Different AltitudeTo have the most meaningful conversations, you have to understand your audience. Executives see across the whole organization (or industry) and connect the dots from top to bottom. So to connect most effectively with them, you need to understand how your subject of conversation fits into their worldview. To practice this, take a complex customer youre working with and practice presenting an update on your work with them. Youre deeply involved in the day-to-day detail of what the customer needs, if the shipment went out on time or a day late, and the challenging personalities of the client. But when youre speaking to an executive, you shouldnt focus on the day-to-day tribulations of account management. Instead, youll want to talk about the total revenue the y generate, the margin contribution, and your strategy to grow their business. Ask yourself, What does the CEO want to know about this account? and develop your material from there. 2. They Get to the PointSenior-level managers know how to quickly dive into an agenda item, dissect it, and ask scathingly good, on-point questions to evaluate it. And so, they may not need you to ramp up to the point of conversation by giving them all the background data youve prepared. Theyll drive the presentation if they have questions or need more background information, theyll ask. Have your agenda prepared, of course, but be ready to flex the conversation accordingly. On that note, anticipate the questions they might ask and prepare responses. One of the biggest gaffes I see in executive conversations is failing to answer questions adequately. If youre not aya what they want, ask clarifying questions (e.g. So what you want to know is how I plan to fund the project?) so you dont waste time providin g the wrong information.3. They Want to Know You Believe in What Youre SayingConviction about what you say to an executive is just as important as the message itself. I was halfway through my first real executive meeting when I realized it was only partly about my proposal- and a lot about how I owned my proposal. The senior-level team wanted to know I had a proposal I would go to the wall for. Because if theyre going to go out on a limb to back it, they want to be sure Im not going to fold. I had one manager who struggled with this. Wed send him in to an executive meeting with program proposals and this caveat Whatever you do, dont blink. One time, he blinked. And it took us months to recover from the fallout of not getting the approvals we needed. To make an impact on executives, you must truly believe in what you are saying and have conviction that its the right solution for the organization.4. If Theres a Flaw in Your Logic, Numbers, or Content, They Will Find ItAnd they will po int it out to you.When youre working with numbers- and you will always be working with numbers when executives are involved- know your data and logic inside and out. While youre preparing, have someone with content expertise review, poke, prod, and test your content- and you- ahead of time. This will help get you ready to dig deeper than whats on each PowerPoint slide. Dont risk destroying your credibility with bad numbers, or worse, guessing. If you arent sure about a number or an answer to a question, say youll look into it and come back.5. They Can Smell BS a Mile AwayIf you think about everything that executives are responsible for (like running an entire company), you can imagine that they have finely honed sensors that allow them to work quickly and focus only on whats most important. And they cant possibly do that by letting others waste their time with nonsensical issues or jargon like paradigm shifts, open kimonos, and eating your own dog food. So, dont do it. And if you ch oose to do it, dont say I didnt warn you.6. Theyre Impatient, and They May Be Abrupt- Dont Expect a Group Hug When You LeaveIf youre presenting something, dont expect flowery kudos and high fives when youre done. Theyll be moving on to their next agenda item while youre gathering up your stuff. This doesnt mean they hated your ideas, though. Remember that efficient atmosphere I talked about earlier They have a lot going on and a lot on their shoulders. Your victory dance will come when you get to implement the proposal theyve accepted.(And when it happens, dance away. You deserve it.)Freaked out? Dont be. You can do this. Its a matter of developing the mindset and doing the footwork. (Another great tip? Executives have assistants who know exactly how to work best with them. Ask one for some insight on how that executive works, and what he expects to see in presentations.) The more prepared you are, the more confident youll be. And, itll make you better at everything else you do.
